Additional Information: The program: OUSD is a large and diverse urban school district located in the East Bay of the SF Bay Area Region. The Behavioral Health Internship Program recruits 20-24 intern/trainees every school year to serve students in the Elementary and K-8 schools across the district. Our interns are both Master of Family Therapy (MFT), LPCC trainees and Masters of Social Work (MSW) students. Interns are provided a robust orientation and weekly individual & group supervision and trainings throughout the school year. Our (truly) applicable trainings facilitated by professionals in the field and the community of trainees/interns cultivated in the program year to year, are some of the best and most unique aspects of our program!

The role: Interns provide 1:1 and group counseling for students, case management for families and participate on COST (student support) teams and integrate themselves into the school community as much as possible. We train counseling interns on a variety of clinical and school system specific topics including:

  • Staff and parent collaboration and consultation
  • COST teams, PBIS, RTI & Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
  • Individual counseling (play-based, CBT, DBT, MI)
  • Goal setting with students and families around attendance, behavior and more at the onset of counseling
  • Support group facilitation
  • Racial Justice & healing
  • Restorative & trauma-informed practices
  • Social-emotional skill building for the yard and/or the classroom
  • Case management to connect families to mental health supports when appropriate, housing, job options, food, etc.Interns are expected to be in the field for the duration of the OUSD school year calendar. Our internship runs from Sept-May
