Drama Therapy Program Welcomes New Core Faculty Member Britton Williams

Welcome, Britton Williams!

February 28, 2023

CIIS’ Drama Therapy Program is thrilled to announce that Britton Williams, a board-certified drama therapist, experienced educator, and author of many articles and book chapters in the field, will be joining their core faculty as a half-time associate professor starting July 1, 2023.

Williams previously taught as an adjunct lecturer at the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and was an adjunct professor in the NYU Drama Therapy Program. She holds an M.A. in Drama Therapy, a B.A. in Theatre, and will complete her doctorate in Social Welfare from the CUNY Graduate Center in June 2023. Her dissertation research project, The Black MAP Project: A Black People’s Epistemology of Healing, lifts the history and trajectory of Black creative healing and seeks to (re)imagine mental health care for Black people.

At CIIS, Williams will teach hybrid courses and serve as a faculty advisor. Says Williams, "I have found that establishing a dynamic multi-contextual and textural space encourages students to actively push past the bounds of their own understanding(s). It is in these co-created creative spaces that students are often able to make connections that extend from the classroom to practice and research while stretching their knowledge points and assumptions. Being invested in drama therapy practice as a conduit for personal, community, and social change requires students and professionals who can imagine past what is to what could be.”
