Sustainability work is underway at CIIS, and we look forward to having you join us! The Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion is advancing this work on campus as part of its strategic priorities to “expand Black, Indigenous, People of Color, LGBTQ+, Neurodiverse, Disabled, ecological, and liberatory perspectives.” To fulfill our commitment to a more ecologically just CIIS, we have developed the following objectives:

Sustainability Objectives

  • Document the History of Sustainability at CIIS
  • Attain Green Building Certification
  • Increase Sustainability Programming and Community Engagement

Glory Jacquat (they/them) is managing the Sustainability work. Their first task is to proceed with thoughtful consideration of the work that has gone before, ensuring that future efforts will have firm foundations for success. Several projects are already underway, including expanding educational resource accessibility. With Glory’s expert guidance, we will be creating a library of resources to highlight CIIS’s current offerings and provide more general educational lists for those looking to learn more about environmental studies and sustainability.

In Fall 2022, we began to explore the process of getting our building LEED Certified, a type of green building certification. Additionally, as we begin bringing Environmental Justice into the Division’s programming we are excited to partner with the Beyond Land Acknowledgment Task Force to invite Indigenous speakers and host other events.

Finally, we will work with students and amplify the incredible work of the Green Team! The Green Team has championed sustainability at CIIS due to the tireless effort of Shmee Giarratana (they/them), Sarah Heady (she/her), and Tiffany Konyen (she/they). Everyone looks forward to expanding the growth of our sustainability initiatives and decreasing CIIS’s environmental impact!
