Through May 16, 2021 the Arts at CIIS will present The Museum of Sentimental Taxonomy, a roving exhibition and social practice by Bay Area artist, Kija Lucas, who invites community members to bring objects of sentiment to be photographed for The Museum. To date, she has documented over 500 objects of deep sentimental value. Through photography and interactive installation, Lucas magnifies the emotional weight of these vestiges of memory, vessels of meaning, and markers of time. By accessing our individual and collective histories through this ongoing photographic process, Lucas holds these objects as access points to the past, highlighting our human tendency to collect and protect the material reminders of the stories we carry.  Lucas’ work prompts us to consider not only the objects, but also their service as placeholders—the meaning of these objects is often born from the loss or absence of another—a moment shared or a loved one. Lucas’ Museum reminds us of the resilience of memory and our refusal to forget.

AND: Please bring a sentimental object for Lucas to photograph.
The picture will become part of this growing archive filled with stories
about the many meanings held in the objects we carry with us over time.
And your object will go home again with you!
