What is Expressive Arts Coaching?
Expressive arts coaching uses creativity to foster resilience, connection, and meaningful change.
At California Institute of Integral Studies (CIIS), we believe that creativity is not a luxury; it is essential to human flourishing and social transformation. In communities facing unprecedented challenges, from climate anxiety to social fragmentation, expressive arts coaching offers a powerful response: a holistic approach that honors the whole person and recognizes that meaningful change happens through creative connection, not just cognitive understanding.
Expressive arts coaching uses creative practices to foster resilience, connection, and transformative change in individuals, groups, and communities. This emerging field addresses a critical societal need: supporting people in navigating complexity, building authentic relationships, and contributing to collective healing in an increasingly divided world. CIIS offers the nation's first Master of Arts in Expressive Arts Coaching & Community Building. This distinction matters profoundly for your career trajectory and the field's future.
How Expressive Arts Coaching Creates Change
Expressive arts coaching integrates multiple artistic modalities, including visual arts, movement, music, drama, poetry, and writing, to help clients explore their experiences and deepest values. Unlike traditional coaching that relies primarily on verbal communication, this approach engages the whole person: mind, body, and spirit.
The process is experiential and culturally responsive. Rather than only discussing challenges, clients engage directly with art-making that reveals insights that words alone cannot access. A coach might invite a client to create a collage representing their vision for community change, use movement to explore feelings about leadership, or write poetry to process experiences of grief. No artistic talent is required of the client; the focus is on the creative process itself and the wisdom that emerges through making.
Why Expressive Arts Coaching Matters Now
Within the expanding field of professional coaching, this modality recognizes that personal transformation and social change are interconnected. When we support individuals in accessing their creative wisdom, we simultaneously build capacity for cultural transformation.
What Makes Our Approach Different
While some coaches use a single art form, we teach an approach that weaves together multiple creative disciplines. This flexibility allows practitioners to meet clients where they are and honor diverse cultural relationships with creativity and expression. Our program also embodies CIIS' commitment to the artist-scholar-practitioner model. You will not simply learn techniques; you will engage deeply with theory, research, and critical perspectives that inform ethical, culturally sensitive practice. This foundation enables you to adapt skillfully to diverse contexts and contribute to the field's ongoing evolution.
Community-Centered Learning
We structure learning around a cohort model that mirrors the relational principles essential to expressive arts coaching. Your cohort becomes a learning community where you develop facilitation skills, explore your own creative process, and build authentic relationships across differences. Two four-day synchronous gatherings during the first and third semesters deepen these connections through embodied, experiential learning to foster attunement and cohesion within the group. This groundwork carries into the asynchronous courses where students will engage with one another in real time via dyad practice, group projects and creative workshopping.
