Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to common questions about the Psychological Services Center
To make an appointment, give us a call at +1 (415) 346-1011.
Our staff understands the importance of responsiveness when you are seeking psychotherapy. Your initial call will either be answered by a staff member who will do a short intake with you, or if we are not able to answer, you can leave a voicemail and our staff will return your call as soon as possible.
Once you have completed the short phone intake, your clinician will call you within 24 hours to schedule your first appointment (usually within a few days after you contact PSC). In the first session, you and your clinician will discuss your situation, treatment planning, options for referral (if necessary), and a fee as determined on a sliding scale.
Our treatment sessions are by appointment only. We are not set up for walk-in or crisis services for people seeking immediate help. We suggest a local hospital emergency room if you are in need of immediate consultation. We do not have a psychiatrist on the premises.
The start of psychotherapy is a big step. Our goal is to make it a constructive experience for you. There may be times when we believe that our services are not right for you. If this is the case, we will make every effort to provide you with other referrals.

We believe that everyone should get the care they need, at rates they can afford, for as long as they need counseling. That’s why our fees for counseling sessions slide on a scale. Our fees are determined by your income, expenses, and specific life situation.
During your phone intake, you will be asked questions about your financial situation and your fee will be determined. If you are in need of no-cost services, we will provide you with referrals. Everyone pays something, but we work hard to make sure everyone can afford the care they need for as long as they need it.
We do not accept health insurance, Medicare, or Medi-Cal at this time. We can provide monthly fee statements which can be used to seek reimbursement from an insurance provider.
All therapy sessions are 50 minutes in length. Psychological assessments are usually several hours of testing and a follow-up session for feedback.
Absolutely. Our therapists are available during evenings.
It is difficult to estimate the length of psychotherapy because each person’s situation is unique. You and your therapist will work together to determine how long your counseling will last. Some concerns can be resolved in a short period of time; others can take longer. There is no limit to the number of sessions you may receive.
At this time, we only offer services in English.
