Biography

Dr. Shiva Fate, M.D., MSCP is a physician, educator, and mental health expert whose work integrates medicine, counseling psychology, and evidence-based psychiatric care. As Adjunct Professor at the California Institute of Integral Studies, she teaches Psychological Assessment, Psychopharmacology, and Biological Bases of Clinical Practice in the Psy.D. program, helping students build strong diagnostic, neurobiological, and clinical reasoning skills while understanding the biological, psychological, and relational dimensions of mental health.

With a medical doctorate and a master’s degree in counseling psychology, Dr. Fate brings a uniquely interdisciplinary perspective to the classroom. Her teaching combines clinical assessment, neuroscience, trauma-informed care, psychopharmacology, and the biological foundations of behavior, with an emphasis on whole-person treatment. Her areas of expertise include mood disorders, psychosis, ADHD, trauma-related conditions, neuroplasticity, and the integration of psychotherapy with medication management.

In addition to her work at CIIS, Dr. Fate is a full-time Assistant Professor of Physician Assistant Studies at Dominican University of California, where she teaches behavioral medicine, psychiatry, clinical pharmacology, and foundation of Clinical medicine. Her clinical background includes family medicine, psychiatric  liaison and intensive outpatient settings, and years of community mental health work through organizations such as NAMI and CHADD.

Dr. Fate is passionate about preparing future clinicians to approach mental health assessment and treatment with both scientific rigor and clinical compassion, bridging medical science with a deep understanding of the human experience.
