Biography

Richard Buggs has over 30 years of experience in higher education—both as an administrator and faculty member. He earned his undergraduate degree at San Diego State University and worked as a Recreation Therapist at Mercy Hospital’s in-patient mental health unit. His international work experience includes several years in Saudi Arabia where he designed and executed a comprehensive recreation and social services program for expatriate employees of Saudi Charter Medical. Upon returning to the US, he spent four years at the National Institute of Health in Bethesda, Maryland providing psychosocial support for cancer and HIV/AIDS patients participating in experimental drug protocols. He received extensive training in end-of-life care and grief counseling and coordinated educational trainings on LGBTQ issues for medical staff. 

In 1996, Richard received his PhD in Clinical Psychology from California Institute of Integral Studies University. His predoctoral internship focused on clinical work with children and adolescents at California Pacific Medical Center’s Outpatient Clinic. His dissertation topic researched the adult experience of emptiness as correlated with childhood abuse. He completed his postdoctoral work at UCSF as part of a team of researchers examining cognitive behavior strategies for HIV medication compliance. Richard is a licensed clinical psychologist and maintains a private practice in San Francisco working with individuals and couples.

His administrative positions at CIIS include Director of Field Placement, Dean of Students and Director of Alumni Services. He helped establish the International Travel Program and has hosted Alumni gatherings throughout the US. He heads the Division of External Relations and Community engagement, works closely with Advancement, Alumni Affairs, Public Programs, and the Ats at CIIS.

Richard also serves as Secretary to CIIS’ Board of Trustees and actively participates in all meetings and activities.
