Herbs are divided into functional categories and are studied with regard to unique and common characteristics. This course introduces herbs that release the exterior, herbs that clear heat and drain fire, herbs that clear heat and cool blood, and herbs that clear heat and dry dampness, herbs that clear heat and toxins, herbs that clear heat from deficiency, and herbs that drain downward. Students are introduced to the characteristics of the herbs, including their Chinese names (pin yin), nature, entering channels, therapeutic functions and contraindications. This course in the series covers the history and development of the Chinese pharmacopoeia, herb processing and dosage as well. Prerequisite: ACM5110. ACM 5110; ACM 5113
