The Anthropology and Social Change department at CIIS offers both M.A. and Ph.D. online degrees that emphasize activism and social justice through scholarship.

With so many crises around the globe, systematic research of utopian alternatives are more relevant now than ever. We engage in the process of co-research to explore existing alternatives and possibilities for social change. We believe in:

  • Returning ethnography to the forefront of anthropology
  • Activist media and organizing skills
  • Post-capitalist and decolonial models
  • Reciprocal learning and teaching with communities of praxis

You will gain an excellent command of history, debates, and perspectives of contemporary social justice movements, and graduate prepared for a career in organizing, grant writing, education, policy analysis, and more. Several scholarships are available specifically for Anthropology and Social Change Students, including scholarships for activism, diversity, travel and language, as well as dissertation funding.
