Infidelity tends to evoke strong feelings and judgments and is among the most difficult and divisive issues a couple will ever face. But individuals, couples, and even therapists receive very little guidance in how to address this common relationship issue. In fact, those who treat cases of infidelity have been found to be biased on the issue regardless of what may be helpful to the couples they advise.

Infidelity is thought to be on the rise, due to ubiquitous technology that makes it easier to find possible partners, and to maintain affairs. At the same time, more actions than ever before are being considered as acts of sexual betrayal.

Join certified sex therapist and clinician Nicolle Zapien to hear about her recent research into cases of infidelity, and how we can reframe the way we think about infidelity and sexuality in our relationships.

Nicolle Zapien received her BA in psychology with a minor in mathematics from the University of Oregon. She holds an EdM in teaching and curriculum from Harvard Graduate School of Education, an MA in clinical psychology from the Professional School of Psychology and a PhD in psychology from Saybrook University. Dr. Zapien also is a licensed and practicing MFT with a private clinical psychotherapy practice in San Francisco through which she serves a variety of clients, the majority of whom are adults and couples. She is an existential/humanistically-oriented clinician and a certified sex therapist through AASECT and has completed a coaching certification through CTI.

Dr. Zapien spent over a decade as the VP of a marketing research company and later as the president of her own consulting and research firm, designing, managing teams and conducting research studies and program evaluations for Fortune 500 businesses, start-ups and nonprofit clients. Some of these projects included higher education strategy development studies and evaluations of early online and hybrid teaching models prior to becoming a therapist and professor. These studies in total included more than 200 custom designed, qualitative, quantitative and mixed methodology projects. Dr. Zapien's first career, in K12 education, included spending five years in public urban education teaching in the Mission district of San Francisco prior to the dotcom boom, developing curriculum, assessments and evaluation programs for preliterate and prenumerate youth. These experiences inform her interest in a humane and inclusive technology that serves social and emotional growth and wellbeing.

Dr. Zapien has written two books, one for clinicians providing treatment directions for infidelity, and another on ethics. Dr. Zapien is currently the Dean of the School of Professional Psychology and Health at California Institute of Integral Studies and serves as the faculty trustee to the academic affairs committee of its board.
