Art helps us explore, relate to one another, and make sense of our world. While traditional art forms remain relevant in our modern world, the central importance of technology in our lives continues to increase and evolve­, so it is no surprise that artists increasingly make use of digital and interactive technologies as a means for making meaning.

The use of virtual reality, artificial intelligence, the internet, social media, and other technologies is challenging and expanding traditional concepts of art making and viewing. Digital technologies also provide platforms for confronting issues we all face in the information age.

Join digital artist Rhonda Holberton and curator Ceci Moss for an exciting conversation exploring the intersection of art and technology and the future of art in the digital age. Rhonda and Ceci examine how advances in technology influence and inspire all aspects of creating, presenting, and viewing art. Drawing on their collective knowledge of new multimedia art practices, their discussion explores art in digital spaces, internet art practices, and interactive digital installations.

Learn how art and technology work together to provide new pathways for understanding our world and ourselves.

Rhonda Holberton

Rhonda Holberton holds an MFA from Stanford University and a BFA from CCA. Her multimedia installations make use of digital and interactive technologies integrated into traditional methods of art production. In 2014 Rhonda was a CAMAC Artist in Residence at Marnay-sur-Seine, France, and she was awarded a Foundation Ténot Fellowship in Paris. Her work is included in the collection of SFMoMA and the McEvoy Foundation and has been exhibited at CULT | Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, FIFI Projects Mexico City; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts; Berkeley Art Center; San Jose Institute of Contemporary Art; and the San Francisco Arts Commission. Rhonda taught experimental media at Stanford University from 2015-2017 and is currently Assistant Professor of Digital Media at San Jose State University.

Ceci Moss

Ceci Moss is a curator, writer and educator based in Los Angeles. She is the founder of Gas, a mobile, autonomous, experimental and networked platform for contemporary art. Her academic research addresses contemporary internet-based art practice and network culture. Her first book Expanded Internet Art: Twenty-First Century Artistic Practice and the Informational Milieu is released through the Bloomsbury series International Texts in Critical Media Aesthetics. Her writing has appeared in Rhizome, Art in America, ArtAsiaPacific, Artforum, The Wire, CURA, New Media & Society and various art catalogs. Previously, she was Assistant Curator of Visual Arts at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Senior Editor of the art and technology non-profit arts organization Rhizome, and Special Projects Coordinator at the New Museum. She is currently a Visiting Lecturer in Critical Studies at the University of Southern California and she has held teaching positions at Scripps College, the San Francisco Art Institute, and New York University.
