The Fourth Annual Latin American Philosophy of Education Society (LAPES) symposium, The Pedagogies of Social Justice Movements in the Americas, seeks to explore the intimate bonds between education and social justice movements in the Americas by asking questions such as, but not limited to: What are the pedagogies of social justice movements that have been used historically in the Americas? How might these translate into contemporary movement work and/or be reinvented? How do local and contemporary movements understand the role of pedagogy in their organizing and activism? Do movements themselves have pedagogical agency? Do they influence educators to reconsider concepts of pedagogy? What lasting lessons on pedagogy do past and contemporary social justice movements of the Americas impart to the future?
The 2017 LAPES symposium will be held at the California Institute of Integral Studies in San Francisco, California on May 18 and 19, 2017. Co-sponsored by the department of Anthropology and Social Change, the School of Undergraduate Studies, the Integral Teaching Fellowship, and the Office of the Provost.
