School of Professional Psychology and Health

PhD, University of Rhode Island

MA, Columbia University; BA, New York University

Judye Hess, PhD. was a core faculty member in the Integral Counseling Psychology program from 1984 - 2016. She received her B.A. from New York University, her M.A. from Columbia University and her doctorate in Clinical Psychology from the University of Rhode Island (1975). She is a licensed psychologist (PSY5553, 1978 )in California with a private practice in Berkeley, CA.. Judye has taught at many other Bay Area schools as well, such as Holy Names University (Oakland, CA.), John F. Kennedy University (Pleasant Hill, CA), Institute for Transpersonal Psychology (Menlo Park, CA), Saybrook University (San Francisco, CA), Antioch University (SF), New College of California (SF) and Hayward State University (Hayward, CA).

Dr. Hess' expertise is in the area of Interpersonal Communication and experiential learning. Having a background in Gestalt therapy and in theatrical performance, she prefers working with couples, families and groups. She taught Marriage and Couple Counseling at CIIS for eighteen years and sees many couples as well as families in her private practice. In 2001, she and CIIS colleague, Padma Catell, PhD. wrote an article entitled, "Dual Dwelling Duos: An Alternative for Long-term Relationships which was published in "The Journal of Couples Therapy, Volume 10, Numbers ¾, 2001 and in the book, Couples , Intimacy and Addictions, ed. By Barbara Jo Brothers, 2001. Based on this article, Judye and her partner were featured in The New York Times, May 4, 2006 and the San Francisco Chronicle Magazine on June 17, 2006. She was also featured on an NBC news segment as well as on several talk radio shows, discussing this alternative form of relationship.

Judye has taught Group Dynamics at CIIS for the last thirteen years. She has been an active member of the Northern California Group Psychotherapy Society (NCGPS) and the American Group Psychotherapy Association (AGPA) for the last thirty years. She has led numerous training workshops for other group therapists on "Interpersonal Gestalt" and Group Process IN THE NOW. She will be presenting in February, 2010 at the AGPA conference in San Diego, CA.

Perhaps Judye is most well known for her work with families. For the last twenty-five years, she has been teaching Family Dynamics and Therapy to students in the Integral Psychology Program at CIIS as well as teaching at other Bay Area schools, mentioned above. Her class at CIIS is one of the most experiential classes in the program that is required for every student. In this class, students are invited to bring in their actual family members to do a real time family therapy session with them. More and more students have taken advantage of this option over the years making for a very exciting, healing and dynamic classroom where students really get "in vivo" training in family therapy. Many students who had no inclination to work with families have decided to do so after taking this class. The ripple effect in their families makes this class truly unforgettable for them.

Judye and former ICP student Ross Cohen, LPC., wrote a book together entitled, "Core Focused Family Therapy: Moving From Chaos to Clarity" published by Idyll Arbor in 2008. This book is particularly appropriate for students and practitioners who favor a humanistic, experiential approach to working with families but lack the guidance to put this kind of approach into practice. The book guides the student or the individual therapy practitioner to make the paradigm shift to working in a systemic model by explaining this shift in a clear and specific way that can be easily understood. This book is now required reading for ICP students taking Judye's class as well as being utilized in other CIIS programs teaching family therapy such as Somatics and the relatively new Community Mental Health program. Steve Tierney, head of CMH, has distributed this book to the health workers in the villages of Zambia, in Africa, and copies have been donated to the library in the University of Zambia.. Judye presented this book at the American Family Therapy Association's (AFTA) annual conference last year in New Orleans, LA and as a workshop for the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California (AFTNC). She has also presented at numerous schools and clinics around the bay area who train interns in doing family therapy.

For the Association of Family Therapists of Northern California newsletter: "Dual Dwelling Duos makes it to the San Francisco Chronicle."

With Padma Catell published in Journal of Couples Therapy: "Dual Dwelling Duos: An Alternative for Long-Term Relationhships."

Published in Open Exchange Magazine: "Closeness and Distance in Intimate Relationships."
