Historically, the field of sexuality research in the United States has not included the experiences and wisdom of racialized sexologists, educators, therapists, or professionals. Instead, sexuality professionals have been trained using a color-free narrative that does an injustice by both excluding their work as well as failing to offer a fuller examination of how they expanded the field and held it accountable. The result of this wholesale erasure is that today, many sexuality professionals understand these contributions as extra or tangential, and not part of the full vision and history of the field of sexology.

Join educator and sexologist Bianca I Laureano and Founder and Executive Director of Sacramento Peers on Prevention (SacPOP) Dr. Ericka Burns for an illuminating conversation highlighting the voices, experiences, strategies, and solutions from sexologists that have been excluded and yet have still emerged as vital contributors to the U.S. and broader North American sexuality field. Bianca shares insights from her recent collection, The People’s Book of Human Sexuality, a futuristic textbook that offers a significant shift in the way we learn and understand sexuality by featuring an expansive array of past and present leaders in the field committed to liberation, healing, equity, and justice.

Together Bianca and Dr. Burns discuss reproductive justice, LGBTQIA+ themes, racial and social justice, gender and disability justice, and share how these sexologists have brought about change and progression.

Bianca I Laureano is an award-winning educator, curriculum writer, and sexologist. She has written several curricula and the sexual and reproductive justice discussion guide for the New York City (NYC) Department of Health published in 2018 and led the curriculum development for the Netflix film Crip Camp and the PBS documentary I Didn’t See You There, which are rooted in disability justice principles. She is an AASECT-certified sexuality educator and supervisor and in May 2020 was awarded an honorary doctorate from California Institute for Integral Studies for her work in expanding the U.S. sexuality field. She is the editor of The People’s Book of Human Sexuality: Expanding the Sexology Archive. Find out more about Bianca at her website and about ANTE UP! at the organization’s website.

Dr. Ericka Burns (she/her) is the Founder and Executive Director of Sacramento Peers on Prevention (SacPOP), a non-profit organization dedicated to educating youth about sexual health and reproductive justice.

Dr. Burns began conducting research on the effectiveness of peer-to-peer interventions in 2009 and by 2011, created a Youth Peer Educator HIV Training program. This program was created to effectively train youth on how to become risk-reduction counselors in clinical and outreach settings and was also a way to measure increased knowledge and healthy behavior changes. Since 2011, Dr. Burns has continued to implement this program with the SacPOP Youth Peer Educator program.

Dr. Burns' work has expanded to support various reproductive health organizations across the nation. This work includes assisting with the development, implementation, and evaluation of their sexual health programs and services related to the advancement of health and racial equity.

Dr. Burns is also a community activist and focuses their work on creating anti-racist sex education, advocating for the rights of marginalized folks, and specializes in reproductive justice, health equity, sexual health, HIV/STI prevention, peer education, and sexual pleasure.
