This summer and fall we've been developing a strong partnership between the Master of Fine Arts Programs and The Arts at CIIS curator Deirdre Visser, who has done so much to make AREA 5 both beautiful and functional, and to develop the Movements and Frameworks thread of our Creative Inquiry for Artists course.

We made a stronger connection with the Anthropology Department, co-sponsoring an evening of film with Travis Wilkerson at the New Nothing Cinema, where he screened and discussed Los Angeles Red Squad. We are also in the process of developing collaborative performance and social action projects such as a Nomadic Café.

December 13-15, 2013, visiting artists from Mugwumpin and Intersection for the Arts descended on AREA 5 with a durational/endurance performance called "Asomnia," in which participating artists performed every two hours for 60 hours without sleeping. MFA students received free entry throughout the event, and participated in a minimarathon of writing and art-making into the wee hours to witness and support the Asomniacs.
