The wellness movement may be one of the more intelligent, life-enhancing exports of the United States, and while it has served to inspire healthful behaviors and an active lifestyle for four generations, unfortunately, for millions more the concept of wellness never caught on. Meg Jordan, PhD, RN, CWP, Professor of Integrative Health, and Co-President of the National Wellness Institute Board of Directors, has recently published a white paper chronicling the 40-year history of the wellness movement, its achievements, and persistent hurdles.
According to Jordan, "Wellness has paradoxically both been lauded as significantly improving lifestyles especially in the workplace, and also condemned as nothing more than a marketing ploy for products ranging from vitamins to dog biscuits. But the actual history reveals it's much more than that." Dr Jordan's report outlines the milestones of the wellness profession and identifies evidence for its continuing legacy. The paper was published in the Winter 2016 issue of American Fitness.
The graduate students in the Integrative Health Studies program are prepared to be wellness managers and coaches for organizations, community center, and private practices. They learn evidence-based strategies to help people achieve healthful lifestyles.
