Participants from more than 40 colleges and universities nationally convened on June 23–26 at CIIS’s 5th Annual Conference “Expanding the Circle: Creating an Inclusive Environment in Higher Education for LGBTQ Students and Studies.”

Lydia Lum’s article profiles several conference speakers and presenters, including Susan Stryker, Ronnie Sanlo, and Jess Delegencia on pressing LGBTQ issues in higher education, and the opportunities that the Summer Institute offers educators to share best practices and initiatives across academic and student affairs, various diversities, disciplines, and LGBT subfields.

Conference sessions explored transgender cultural competency, the mental health needs of LGBT students, and how to create an inclusive environment for bisexual students and other campus constituents.

Institute participants included academic deans and administrators, faculty and faculty development specialists, student life professionals and campus counselors.
