Dr. Andrej Grubacic, Professor and Chair of the Anthropology and Social Change program, has been named as a recipient of the annual Political Economy of the World System (PEWS) Distinguished Book Award for his book, "Living at the Edges of Capitalism: Adventures in Exile and Mutual Aid." It is co-authored with Denis O'Hearn.
PEWS is the official political economy section of the American Sociological Association (ASA). The ASA annually grants distinguished awards for publications in a number of categories. The PEWS Distinguished Book Award is given to the best world-systems book or books published within the last two calendar years.
"Living at the Edges of Capitalism" is a historical and systematic study of exilic communities engaged in mutual aid, inspired by the authors' experiences visiting Cossacks, living with the Zapatistas, and developing connections and relationships with prisoners and ex-prisoners. The book was published by University of California Press in 2016.
According to feminist theorist Silvia Federici, a CIIS Spring 2017 visiting scholar, the book "makes an important contribution to the social sciences as well as to radical politics."
