The Anthropology and Social Change department has been busy with professional travel this Fall. First, core faculty members Targol Mesbah, Andrej Grubacic, and Michelle Glowa were invited by the graduate program in Sociology at the Benemérita Autonomous University of Puebla (BUAP) in Mexico to teach an intensive course on the methodologies and theory of militant and activist ethnography.
Over the course of a week, our CIIS faculty presented to dozens of students and colleagues, introducing them to the work and approaches that form the basis of teaching in Anthropology and Social Change. This course was one of the first steps in a growing partnership with BUAP and now with new colleagues at the Autonomous University for Social Movements.
Then, in late November, the core faculty and five students from Anthropology and Social Change headed to Washington, D.C., to present, converse, and develop connections at the 2017 American Anthropological Association (AAA) conference. At the world's largest gathering of anthropologists, with more than 6,000 scholars in attendance, the CIIS contingent continued to build the Radical Anthropology Network, participated in important sessions on urban commons, critical food system education, and new trajectories in sanctuary cities, and made new and exciting connections.
Students commented that this first experience at a professional conference was an excellent introduction, and are excited to develop a stronger CIIS presence for the 2018 AAA meetings to be held in San Jose.
