Current Research
In 2018, Andrew Harlem’s co-edited volume Developmental Perspectives in Child Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapywas published by Routledge. He is also developing for publication two presentations he made at the most recent Division 39 (Psychoanalysis) meetings: one is an interdisciplinary paper that focuses on the dynamics of apologies, with particular emphasis on the utility of public apologies for redressing social injustice; the other formulates “first generation whiteness” as a way of understanding the tensions that inhere in Jewish identity, where a traumatized ethnic unconscious is overlaid by considerable white privilege.
In September, he will be presenting a paper on the cultural encapsulation of D. W. Winnicott's ideas at the San Francisco Center for Psychoanalysis.
Professor Harlem was recently promoted to Associate Editor of Psychoanalytic Dialogues.
Past Research
Dr. Harlem’s writing and scholarship focuses on the topics of contemporary psychoanalysis, dissociation and enactment, the clinical relationship, culture, immigration, clinical pedagogy and supervision, and the cultural psychology of Sri Lanka, where he served as a United States Peace Corps volunteer. He has been awarded the Jacob K. Javits Fellowship in Psychology; the National Institutes of Health Culture, Health & Human Development Fellowship; and the National Institute of Mental Health National Research Service Award. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for Psychoanalytic Psychology.
