This class will focus on techniques for frame drummers that extend the commonly used sounds and strokings, expanding our playing possibilities on the bodhran and the tar. These are two drums that Velez often uses in performance. On tar and bodhran, new options concerning fast pa's and snapping will be shown and developed in a systematic and gradual approach. Velez will use his Handance style of teaching in which drum language is utilized to accelerate learning and, as always, will emphasize the communal nature of frame drumming.
Participants should be comfortable with basic holding position and strokes unique to the frame drum. A minimum of one year of experience is recommended.
Glen Velez, a four-time Grammy Award recipient, has played a seminal role over the last 25 years by introducing the frame drum to modern audiences. He has taught extensively worldwide, investigating the healing properties of drumming and sound. As a master teacher, he has developed his own approach, called The Handance Method, incorporating voice and body movement into learning to play the frame drum. His most recent recording is Rhythms of the Chakras, Volume 2. www.glenvelez.com | www.myspace.com/glenvelez
