About the Exhibit

The artists in Un | Moored explore the complex poetics and politics of contemporary migration. Tanzanian artist Hellen Gaudence pairs large format portraits of African immigrants who make a home in the American Southwest, with Tanzanian landscapes that collectively denote the artist's homeland. Poet and visual artist Deborah Jack, a native of St. Maarten, explores the memory of-and longing for-home through the recorded oscillations of ocean waves, or a tremulous walk through the familiar landscape of the island. Bayeté Ross Smith's Passing series addresses the politics of contemporary migration, and the intersection of ethnicity, skin tone, and national origin, and the power and privilege that accrues to certain identities over others.

To travel assumes the privilege of return, of going home. Migration by contrast suggests the building of a new home, and whether forced or chosen, the threads of displacement and diasporic longing are woven throughout its architecture.
