In Dagara society in West Africa, all healing is accomplished in ritual through nature, and the participation of the village community. Nature is the landscape in which all healing takes place and it is the environment in which we renew ourselves and become whole, experiencing a sense of well-being.
In modernity, we have lost our natural tendency to function communally by embracing such thinking as "pull one's self up by one's bootstraps" and "every man for himself." Yet only with community is a person's life purpose discovered, nurtured, and most importantly, required to sustain community. Healing through ritual nourishes our spirits and our psyches. It heals the wounds in us that are unseen and unspoken. Ritual offers us a deeper healing solution to complex dilemmas that plague modern life-those problems that lie beneath the surface, waiting to erupt.
Discover how to create community and learn the technology of ritual that activates the healing powers of nature. In this workshop, Malidoma will lead participants in ritual drumming and singing, so bring your drum and any other percussion instruments.
Malidoma Patrice Somé, PhD, is from Burkina Faso, West Africa. In his native language, Malidoma means, "Be friends with the stranger." By way of bridging worlds, he has been initiated as an elder and has come to be seen as a gifted diviner by his Dagara community. He received an MA in world literature from the University of Ouagadougou; a DEA in political science from the Sorbonne, University of Paris; as well as an MA and a PhD in literature from Brandeis University. In the early 1990s, Somé was professor of literature and French at the University of Michigan and visiting professor at Stanford University. He has since turned his attention to bringing the wisdom of the Dagara people to the world through the written word and through his work with individuals and groups around the world. The author of Of Water and the Spirit, The Healing Wisdom of Africa Ritual, and Power, Healing, and Community, he divides his time between his home in Orlando, FL, and various communities in the U.S., Europe, and Africa.
