This evening will present curated short films and outtakes from the conference "Homonationalism and Pinkwashing" held at the Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies (CLAGS) in NYC in April. A conversation about the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement (BDS) will take place, along with a facilitated discussion with Amirah Mizrahi, Zachariah Barghouti and the audience on Palestine, Homonationalism and Pinkwashing.
We hope to spark a conversation in the Bay Area on queers and allies' support for BDS, on ending pinkwashing and building a movement of direct support for Palestinian queers. All are welcome.
Amirah Mizrahi is a US-based poet, comics-maker, activist, and educator. Her works are informed by her experiences as an immigrant, queer Mizrahi woman, and dwell at the intersections between war trauma, settler colonialism, sexuality, and resistance. Her artworks have been featured in two Florida galleries and she has performed her poetry at universities, infoshops, queer centers, and open mics across the country.
Zachariah Barghouti is a queer palestinian muslim Arab. Zac was born in Area C of the Israeli-occupied Palestinian Territories. He is an organizer with the Palestinian Youth Movement USA Bay Area Branch, and the co-president of the General Union of Palestine Students at San Francisco State University, where he is a senior in the department of International Relations.
BDS* - In 2005, Palestinian civil society issued a call for a campaign of Boycotts, Divestment and Sanctions against Israel until it complies with international law and Palestinian rights. A truly global movement against Israeli Apartheid is rapidly emerging in response to this call. bdsmovement.net
Homonationalism* occurs when sub-sectors of specific gay communities achieve legal parity with heterosexuals and then embrace racial and religious supremacy ideologies. Homonationalism is increasingly present in Nationalist ideologies across the globe, as secular right-wing forces increasingly leave anti-gay politics to organized religion.
Pinkwashing* is a practice by which a government points to or exaggerates gay rights in order to present itself as progressive. This practice of obscuring or “whitewashing” racial or religious oppression with claims of “gay rights” is called PINKWASHING.
