Now What? Getting a Grip on the Mueller Report: An Unredacted Community Hearing

What’s happening, what does it all mean, and who can you trust? How do we make meaning of Robert Mueller’s report, the testimony, and the context of its necessity?

How do we care for one another, our communities, and ourselves, and foster communication in resistance to current political and humanitarian catastrophes?

CIIS invites Bay Area community members to join us for an evening of interpretation, scholarship, and joyous rebellion.

Presenting will be psychotherapists, legal scholars, spiritual leaders, performers, poets, and political wonks, including:

• Hadar Aviram, LLB, PhD, MA, is a professor of Law at University of California, Hastings College of the Law, where she codirects the Hastings Institute for Criminal Justice. She is a leading voice in California and nationwide against mass incarceration, and a frequent media commentator on politics, immigration, criminal justice policy, civil rights, and the Trump Administration. A recognized authority on the Mueller Report, Hadar has held several events explaining the report to the public. Her blog, California Correctional Crisis, covers criminal justice policy in California. She is the author of three books: Cheap on Crime (2015), The Legal Promise and the Process of Justice (2019) and Yesterday’s Monsters: The Manson Family Cases and the Illusion of Parole (forthcoming 2020), which examines the California parole process through 50 years of parole transcripts in the Manson Family cases.
• Jillian Elliot is a lifelong community organizer who leads and participates in strategic planning, training, and mentoring for people to become politically active. She was the Political Director for Congressman Mark DeSaulnier for the successful 2018 congressional campaign. As COO of California League of Conservation Voters, she directed fundraising, operations, and membership and communications programs that connected individuals with their representatives to advocate for environmental issues. She currently represents Indivisible Central Contra Costa on Indivisible California Steering Committee and works on Rock the Congress, which provides trainings for individuals and organizations to effectively campaign and advocate at the national and local levels.
• Demarris Evans teaches mindfulness through the lens of healing and human potential. For 20 years she has worked as a trial attorney and recently as the Racial Justice and Equity Attorney at the San Francisco Public Defender’s Office. Demarris is a graduate of the Gerry Spence Trial Lawyers College and the Warrior One Mindfulness in Law Teacher Training Program. She has been a co-facilitator for the Law and Social Change Jam offered by Yes! and is on the Board of Directors for the Mindfulness in Law Society, where she is Head of the Equity and Inclusion Division.
  
• Thrive Choir was born to sing the music for the revolution. They are a diverse group of vocalists, artists, activists, educators, healers, and community organizers based in Oakland, CA. Their heartfelt and soul-stirring original music is a fusion of gospel, soul and folk. As part of Thrive East Bay—a purpose-driven community focused on personal and social transformation—the Choir's music illuminates the joy, pain, and beauty of what it means to be human in this time of systemic transformation.
• The Living Arts Playback Theatre Ensemble transforms personal stories told by audience members into improvised theatre pieces on the spot using movement, ritual, music and spoken improvisation. At the heart of their work is a respect for the power of personal story to build bridges between people and cultures.
• Armand Volkas is a psychotherapist, drama therapist, and theatre director. He is Adjunct Associate Professor in the Counseling Psychology program at CIIS. As founder and director of Healing the Wounds of History, Center for the Living Arts, and Living Arts Playback Theatre Ensemble, Armand has developed innovative programs using theatre for social change, intercultural conflict transformation, and healing generational and collective trauma.
• Marvin K. White, MDiv, currently serves as the Minister of Celebration at GLIDE Church in San Francisco. He is a graduate of The Pacific School of Religion, the author of four collections of poetry: Our Name Be Witness, Status, and the two Lammy-nominated collections last rights and nothin’ ugly fly. He is articulating a vision of social, prophetic and creative justice through his work as a poet, artist, teacher, collaborator, preacher, cake baker, and Facebook Statustician.
