Do you need human connection? Join us for a weekend about stripping performance to the bare essentials!
Jump start your art with an intensive weekend of writing and performance with the MFA Programs at CIIS.
Most of us perform versions of ourselves everyday - in love, work, and on social media. In this workshop, you'll develop a more vulnerable narrative. What is the human impulse to record and remember? How can you use it to make works of art that are original, playful and profound - and demand more of their audience than to be "liked" and "shared"?
You can show up empty-handed to this workshop - but be ready to go deep, fast. Spend Friday evening in lively conversation with award-winning playwright Lynne Kaufman and internationally renowned performance maker Erika Chong Shuch.
Saturday, dive into an intimate, intense, and productive workshop setting with the full faculty, who are renowned playwrights, directors, choreographers and performance makers. With support, structure and inspiration from one of our mentors - and the energy of the group - you'll produce, refine and revise an original work on Saturday and Sunday that you will perform on Sunday afternoon. Believe it! Think of it as a "lost weekend" - one in which you devote yourself completely to making and performing new work.
Naked in the Digital Age is designed both for new and experienced writers and performers. Choose from one of the following tracks:
THE FIVE MINUTE PLAY
...with Lynne Kaufman
The five-minute play is a crash course in the arc of story. Learn how to structure a beginning, a middle, and an end. Create a dramatic zone for tension, conflict and catharsis, or explore the depths of character through revealing dialogue. See and hear your play enacted by your fellow writer-performers, and perform new works-in-progress.
Lynne Kaufman is a nationally award-winning playwright. Her twenty full length plays have been produced in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York City, and Washington D.C. Her recent play, "Acid Test", about the life of Ram Dass, ran for over a year at The Marsh Theatre in San Francisco and Berkeley. She is also the author of three published novels and dozens of short stories.
THE THREE MINUTE PERFORMANCE
...with Erica Chong Shuch and Sean San jose
In this performance technique and composition workshop, we will generate multiple sketches of original performances. Each participant will wear the shoes of director, choreographer, writer and performer and learn generative processes to build solos, duets and ensemble works. This is an interdisciplinary form, in which people may write, do choreography, and/or create performances of any kind out of multiple materials. Sean and Erika will create groups based on how many people attend, and the needs of the group.
Erika Chong Shuch is a choreographer and director whose work has been supported by the Berkeley Repertory Theatre's Groundfloor and ACT's New Works Program and has been commissioned by Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, Dancers' Group, Chang Mu Dance Company (Seoul, Korea) and Daejeon Metropolitan Dance Company (Daejeon, Korea). A resident artist at Intersection for the Arts since 2004, she is a recipient of the Falstaff Award in Choreography, the Gerbode Foundation's Emerging Choreographer's Award, a Goldie Award and a nominee for a Helen Hayes Award in Choreography. http://www.erikachongshuch.org/
Comments from last year's participants...
"When I was in the midst of pre-performance angst, I had a realization -this was exactly why I had signed up for the workshop in the first place. I wanted to be thrust into that challenging but rewarding place of creating work on the spot, under pressure, with a time constraint, and with an audience waiting."
"Part of the writing process is procrastination, hope, despair, anxiety, exhilaration, curiosity and joy - all of which I experienced this weekend."
"Attending the workshop has given me permission to be more full throttle - in particular with my performance of my work."
