I know of no greater promise for the future than the rediscovery of our interdependence--indeed inter-existence--with all life on Earth. So it's good to look at both the ancient roots of this re-emerging world view and at its fresh articulations in contemporary science. The perspectives brought forward by deep ecology, living systems theory, and ecopsychology help shake us awake to our mutual belonging in this crisis-ridden age.  Without a vision and experience of our embeddedness in the sacred living body of Earth, we'll never create a life-sustaining culture.

As the poet Rilke put it:

"If we surrendered to Earth's intelligence, we could rise up rooted like trees."

Author, teacher, and eco-philosopher Joanna Macy, PhD, is known the world over for her workshops for social and environmental activists. Drawing on Buddhism, systems theory, and deep ecology, her Work That Reconnects helps people transform despair and apathy, in the face of overwhelming social and ecological crises, into constructive, collaborative action. It brings a new way of seeing the world, as our larger living body, freeing us from the assumptions and attitudes that now threaten the continuity of life on Earth. She is an adjunct faculty member at CIIS and the author of several books, including her most recent with coauthor Chris Johnstone: Active Hope: How to Face the Mess We're in without Going Crazy.
