ABOUT THE TALK
The Integral "tradition" that comes to CIIS through its founder, Haridas Chaudhuri, is unique in its spacious openness. It is radically affirmative in nearly every direction in terms of possible approaches and viewpoints that might be deemed "Integral." Dr. Chaudhuri makes clear that the spiritually inclined, the agnostic and the atheist are welcomed in the pursuit of truth. So what then is the essence of the "Yoga"? And how is it relevant in the academic context?
This talk will include a brief info session on the Asian & Comparative Studies program.
ABOUT THE PRESENTER
Jim Ryan has taught at CIIS for 33 years, is currently a Professor in the Asian and Comparative Studies program teaching Hinduism and Sanskrit, and worked closely with Bina Chaudhuri, wife of Dr. Haridas Chauduri, at the Cultural Integration Fellowship, which they founded in 1951. Dr. Ryan has conducted extensive research on the integral yoga of Sri Aurobindo, and his work on Aurobindo and the Mother's approaches to integral education has been published in ReVision Magazine (2005) and in Integral Education: New Directions for Higher Learning (Albany: State University of New York Press, 2010).
