Co-sponsored by the Center for Art and Social Justice at CIIS

Artist, educator, and activist Lauren Elder came of age during the social and environmental justice movements of the late 1960s. The ideals she learned in those aspirational years continue to inform her practice. Her work has evolved from a focus on environmentally situated performances to the creation of permanent sculptural environments to frame both the comedies and dramas of everyday life. Elder is/has? trained in sculpture and landscape design. Her work has been supported through public funding, local business, and the “sweat-equity” of participants.

Zakiya Harris is co-founder of Earthseed Consulting, a Bay Area-based organization working at the intersection of environmental justice, art, and community. Dancer, vocalist, and actor, Zakiya “The Shapeshifter” Harris is also a social change strategist engaging diverse communities in debates about current environmental policy and sustainable lifestyle choices, and empowering low-income, disadvantaged communities to access green economic resources and address environmental challenges.
