This CIIS faculty round-table will seek to articulate and enact the values of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the context of an increasingly polarized cultural climate. Over the past several years, a new online media landscape has disrupted traditional filters and allowed radical and reactionary voices from across the political spectrum to flood into the public sphere. A recent New York Times article referred to this phenomenon as the "Intellectual Dark Web." At the same time, university campuses across the US have been engaged in fierce debates about the meaning and potential limits of "free speech," particularly when this speech comes in the form of criticisms of the progressive values of diversity, equity, and inclusion. This round-table will inquire into the dynamics at play in our tumultuous moment with the aim of leveraging the unique pluralistic spiritual mission of CIIS in service of cultural healing.
