The Indian tradition of chanting the Vedas is considered the oldest unbroken oral tradition in existence today. This process of careful listening and exact recitation has been handed down from one generation to the next for several thousand years. It remains one of the most important conduits for bringing tradition and traditional ways of being into the modern day. An emphatically oral tradition, Vedic chant utilizes only three notes, emphasizes precise pronunciation and duration, and is quite different from singing or from kirtan. The process of learning Vedic chant involves the student listening carefully to the teacher chant a passage and then repeating what was heard as exactly as possible. The mental attention that develops through this oral call and response is known to increase mental clarity and memory as well as produce a deep, experiential bond between the participants. In experiencing Vedic chant, it is easy to see why it has been considered such a powerful and sacred practice for millennia. Something special happens which has profound implications for all areas of our journey through life on this planet.
Neither experience nor a "good singing voice" is required. Classes will include both experience of chanting as well as explanation of the tradition and "rules" of chanting. Everyone is welcome. Each series will cover a different set of Vedic chants.
This class is available as a combined course with Patañjali's Yogasūtra>>
