Drumming allows for us to regroup when stress and anxiety take over our minds. That’s because drumming has the power, based upon scientific evidence, to reroute or recirculate blood and oxygen in the body.
No experience or instruments required. We can drum on the body, use the voice, and even the desk, table, or steering wheel to reroot!
Jamaican-born and raised, internationally acclaimed percussionist and visionary facilitator and conjurier Afia Walking Tree (we/ze/she/theym/Nana) blends their love for both earth and drum into sustainable life-art practices that highlight a new way forward through wellness, healing justice, and collective care. Their life-art practices are dedicated to authentic edutainment experiences, lectures, SoulFree empowerment journeys, and permaculture food forests and landscape designs. They are currently principal steward for Solidarity Farms Jamaica, a 12-acre farm that anchors the vision of empowerment, wellness, and protection for women, LBGTQI+. Afia has been an adjunct professor at Holy Names University, California Institute for Integral Studies, Sophia University, Edna Manley College for the Performing Arts, and the University of the West Indies Jamaica. Motivated to get to the heart of what is alive with us, what is ailing us, and what is on our hearts to create intimacy, Afia curates spaces that allow for radical, transparent music, songs, and story-sharing, plant-based foods and medicines that stir us alive in love. The drum, the body, the voice, and the land are interwoven to nurture our holistic sense of coming home to ourselves in all we endeavor. See their offerings at Afiawalkingtree.com.
