The first of five classes is given to a reading of Emerson's Nature and a brief consideration of the biographies of a few of Emerson's contemporaries given in Menand's Metaphysical Club. The middle three classes are given to a study of the core writings of three classic American philosophers-Peirce, James, and Dewey-along with Menand's thorough account of their entwined biographies. The last class is devoted to a discussion of essays on pragmatism in the second half of the 20th century.
