In light of concerns over the health of our community in a rapidly changing landscape, the opening event scheduled for Saturday, March 14, was postponed indefinitely. We have extended the exhibition timeline and still hope to have a poetry reading and celebration of this project in May.
Prescriptions for Life is a collaboration between visual artist Paula Gray and poet Theresa Whitehill. Catalyzed by the chance find of a pharmacy prescription ledger from 1890, the artists explore the nature and promise of "prescriptions," the conception of the body and illness in Western medicine at the turn of the 20th century, and what remains life-affirming and necessary in the face of grief and mourning that accompanies the losses of a best friend, parents, and siblings. These long-time friends—who have known and respected each other's voices and work for decades—are collaborating for the first time.
