In a time of environmental and political crises, can Séance, Spirituality, and Performance intersect to provide models for political action and contemplative inquiry? Dancing With The So Called Dead is a month long festival of workshops and public conversation that examines the intersections of performance making and mediumship.

The MFA Program in Theatre-Performance Making, and The Arts at CIIS are proud to host some of the most dynamic and thought-provoking voices in contemporary performance art: Peggy Phelan (Unmarked, Mourning Sex, Live Art: LA) will deliver a keynote address; Guillermo Gómez-Peña will lead an immersive workshop on performance and the body as a site for imagination, reinvention, activism and radical spirituality, culminating in the creation of a performative human altar referencing the Mexican tradition of Dia de los Muertos.; and artists Amara Tabor-Smith, La Chica Boom, Leslie Hill and Helen Paris (Curious), Sean San José, and Dohee Lee offer workshops and public conversations that mine the (im)materiality of performance through investigations of passing, loss, memory, mourning, death, and dedication.

The MFA degree in Theatre–Performance Making is jointly offered by California Institute of Integral Studies (SF) and the University of Chichester (UK). Our core faculty is comprised of internationally recognized performance makers and scholars working across a wide variety of contemporary forms. We support emerging and professional artist/scholars who want to develop their work and artistic identity in the San Francisco Bay Area and internationally. We are currently accepting applications for Fall 2017.
