Rina Sircar

Venerable Dr. Rina Sircar Life and Legacy

This page honors the life and legacy of a CIIS professor and wisdom teacher of the Theravada forest tradition.

Dr. Rina Sircar (d. 2018) was a beloved professor emerita whose teachings reached across the globe and multiple generations. As a representative of an ancient lineage in the Theravada forest tradition and as a disciple of one of the greatest Buddhist masters of the twentieth century, the Very Venerable Taungpulu Tawya Kaba-Aye Sayadaw, she was one of the earliest and the first female teacher to bring the wisdom teachings and meditation practices of the oldest school of Buddhism to the United States. She taught in CIIS’ Philosophy and Religion Department for nearly four decades and was co-founder and resident meditation teacher of Taungpulu Kaba-Aye Monastery.

The Professor Rina Sircar Legacy project was made possible by a generous contribution from John Paul Lenney and Mary Pax Lenney.

The following teachings are offered to the community through the efforts of Timothy P. Lighthiser, Ph.D. (PAR ‘99/HUM ’06) in remembrance of the late Very Venerable Taungpulu Tawya Kaba-Aye Sayadaw and his student, Dr. Rina Sircar. Thanks also goes to the collaboration with fellow alumna Anne Teich, Ph.D. (PAR ’82 & ’90), and the assistance of CIIS staff.
