Leaving CIIS in your will and other planned gifts

The CIIS Annual Fund: The Annual Fund is the cornerstone of CIIS's giving program. It consists of the collective gifts to CIIS from alumni, trustees, faculty, staff, friends, as well as foundations, businesses, and corporations. The Institute relies on these contributions to help cover its operating expenses and ensure its financial stability and continued academic excellence. In fiscal year 2003-04, nearly 250 donors contributed a total of $100,000 to the Annual Fund. See detailed information about the Annual Fund.

Matching Programs: A corporate-sponsored matching gift program can double or even triple an employee's gifts to CIIS. Ask for a matching gift form from your or your spouse's/partner's employer (usually available in the Human Resources office) and mail it with your CIIS contribution or shortly thereafter.

Scholarships: CIIS currently spends five percent of its operating budget (or $500,000) for scholarships and gift aid, and has set the goal of increasing this amount by 10% ($50,000) each year. Your gift for scholarships will help ensure that dedicated students with financial need are able to pursue and complete their educations. With a gift of $10,000 or above, payable over a number of years, you can establish a named endowed scholarship at the Institute.

The Challenge Grant for the Counseling Psychology Centers: The J.C. Kellogg Family Foundation has established a $50,000 Challenge Grant in support of the counseling centers that serve as training facilities for master's degree students. Each year, hundreds of clients visit the counseling centers for safe, supportive, and low-cost psychotherapy. The Challenge Grant, which runs through March 2005, will match all gifts to the counseling psychology centers on a dollar for dollar basis.

The Phyllis Jackson Memorial Fund for the Arts at CIIS: The Phyllis Jackson Memorial Fund for the Arts promotes and celebrates the arts at CIIS and within the San Francisco Bay Area community. Created in 2003 in honor of CIIS staff member and artist Phyllis Jackson, the fund assists emerging artists, underwrites art exhibitions, and encourages art education.

The Haridas Chaudhuri Endowment for South Asian Philosophy and Culture: The Haridas Chaudhuri Endowment for South Asian Philosophy and Culture is the first endowed chair in the Institute's history. The Endowment was named in honor of CIIS's founder, Dr. Haridas Chaudhuri, and will bring scholars, artists and political figures to the Institute to deepen understanding of India's rich history, philosophy, culture, and spiritual legacy. CIIS has raised $300,000 towards the $1 million to fully endow the Chair.

Friends Membership Groups at CIIS: CIIS has established two Friends groups: the Friends of the Arts at CIIS and the Friends of Integrative Health at CIIS. The Friends of the Arts at CIIS supports the various Spirit in the Arts exhibits at the galleries on Mission Street and the Minna Street Center. The Friends of Integrative Health at CIIS provides scholarships for students in the Integrative Health Studies program. Both Friends groups provide members with opportunities to meet for salons engaging in conversations regarding art and spirituality or alternative and complementary healing. To become a member of either Friends group, a contribution of $500 for Associate Membership or $1,000 for Supporting Membership is renewable each year.

Planned Giving: CIIS welcomes your inquiries about making a planned gift to the Institute. These gifts, which include bequests, charitable trusts, and appreciated securities, can provide you with a variety of tax advantages and will welcome you as a member of the Institute's Heritage Society.

Meet the Director

Our philosophy at CIIS is that giving is an opportunity, not an obligation. We deeply honor the donor’s intent for each gift, and warmly thank you for including CIIS in your philanthropy. It is exciting to be part of the Institute at this point in its history: I have heard it said that CIIS is entering a Renaissance because of its vibrant academic and public outreach programs, growing influence, and solid financial base. Your gift will make it possible for that positive trend to continue. I would be delighted to speak with you about making a gift that reflects your support for CIIS’s vision and mission, and invite you to contact me.

Dorotea Reyna has served as Director of Development for CIIS since March 2003. Prior to coming to CIIS, she served as a professional fundraiser for Dominican University of California, the University of California at San Francisco, and the National Hispanic Scholarship Fund.
