Room and Board: Depending on the neighborhood, you will find rents starting at approximately $900 per month for a studio and $1,200 per month for a one bedroom. You may also want to consider shared housing.

There are several rental listing agencies in the Bay Area that provide their services free of charge and there are numerous rental agencies that are fee-based services. Fee based services usually charge a flat fee that provides access to all of their current listings for a set period of time. One of the most comprehensive sites that is free of charge is www.craigslist.org. You may also use this site to search for used furniture, bikes, and computers as well as discover up-coming community activities. Below is a list of rental agencies that offer on-line services in the Bay Area.

You’ll also find postings for roommates and housing on CIIS’ student portal, Pathway, at https://pathway.ciis.edu/ics/Campus_Life/. While anyone may view the housing and roommate postings on Pathway, you’ll need a username and password in order to place a posting. Anyone with an active application on file in the Admissions Office has a username and password. If you do not know your user name and password, please email registeronline@ciis.edu.

Miscellaneous Expenses: Miscellaneous expenses include daily necessities such as clothing, laundry, mail and postage, recreation, and entertainment. Not included are additional costs such as buying a car or additional appliances. Personal expenses will vary according to a student's habits and preferences.

Expenses for Married Students: Students who plan to bring members of their families to the U.S. must plan carefully for their family's support and must include and additional $7,000 per dependent on the Total per Year fee. These additional monies are to be included on the Certificate of Funding and are for additional expenses for housing, food, health care and insurance. Child care and schooling must also be considered. Spouses, children, and other dependents may not be allowed into the United States unless the student can prove availability of sufficient funds to support dependents.

Banking Services: If a sponsor in your home country will transfer funds to you, then you should establish a relationship with a U.S. bank near the Institute or your home in the Bay Area. You may consult the international or foreign exchange department at the sponsor's bank, or a branch of a U.S. bank in your home country for instructions on how to do this.
