A Retreat with John Welwood

P
sychological problems arise as spiritual issues—symptoms of disconnection from one’s capacity to be present with one’s experience. Conventional psychotherapy rarely teaches people how to relate directly to their immediate experience or how to hold it with mindfulness and awareness. Spiritual practices often bypass and transcend the complex and difficult experiences that are part of the human condition instead of integrating and transforming them. Psychological and spiritual work, when combined, can complement and enhance one another by increasing the growth potentials of each, allowing every experience to reveal its own intelligence and every emotional issue or difficulty to provide a spiritual opportunity for a person to connect with him or herself more deeply.

The most important capacity for this kind of work is unconditional presence—the ability to remain open and freely inquire into our bodily felt experience, without bias, agenda, or manipulation of any kind. This quality of presence, like walking a fine razor’s edge, allows us to inhabit ourselves, our bodies, and our feelings in a new and authentic way. Unconditional presence heals the inner divisions that lie at the root of all psychological problems, allowing the experiential process to unfold in the direction of truth or deeper being.

The format of this retreat includes talks,
experiential work, and meditation. It is designed both for those in the helping professions and anyone who is interested in these issues.
