CEU Information: The Soul of Japan: A cross-cultural exploration of Psyche.

Course Objectives: The crucial emotional problems that are facing contemporary Japanese people will be explored through dialogue with Japanese psychologists at Ritsumeikan University. We will examine how certain key figures in the world of Japanese mental health, particularly the works of Hayao Kawai (elder and younger) have reshaped analytic psychotherapy in terms of Japanese history. Through experiential and academic inquiry, the Japanese notion of Soul and Self will be discussed. By leaving the familiar and placing ourselves in an environment that is less known, we will allow ourselves to examine what assumptions about ourselves and others are carried into our clinical work. Methods for
integrating this cross cultural perspective into clinical work will also be addressed.
