The Alchemy of Movement

Jaime Nisenbaum

For Carl Jung, the alchemical quest of transmuting base matter into gold was a metaphor for the process of psychological development—the transformation of unconscious material into consciousness—which ultimately leads to wholeness. Central to the alchemist's work was the alchemical vessel, a container where substances were brought together to be "cooked" and then transformed into gold.

In this workshop, the expressive body in movement becomes an alchemical vessel where transformation can occur. The substances of our life stories—memories, thoughts, feelings, and images—are drawn together and explored through the language of movement, drawing, and creative writing in an open, imaginal process. The unique interplay of movement, image, and emotion acts as a catalyst for new experiences and insights to emerge, allowing participants to envision and actualize positive and lasting change in their lives.

Jaime Nisenbaum, PhD candidate, is a professor at CIIS, a Registered Expressive Arts Therapist, and past codirector of Tamalpa Institute. In his work with individuals and groups, Jaime uses innovative approaches that combine body-centered expressive arts modalities with depth psychological approaches. He has lectured at universities and is a contributing author to the book The Body Can Speak. Jaime is currently writing his dissertation toward his doctorate in Clinical Psychology.
