Zen Calligraphy:
Brush Creativity and Spirituality

Kazuaki Tanahashi

Drawing a line with a brush is a wonderful way to work with your body and mind. In this weekend workshop, participants will follow the traditional way of learning calligraphy while being aware of any anxiety, frustration, and self-criticism. You will learn the basic skills and creative process of brushwork by reproducing ideograms from ancient Chinese calligraphic masterpieces, and will also have the opportunity to interpret these works and improvise. While working, participants will witness mindfulness, surprise, and joy, and contemplate how healing and breakthroughs work in your body, mind, society, and the environment. No previous experience in brushwork is needed.

Kazuaki Tanahashi is a painter, calligrapher, writer, and peace worker who was born and trained in Japan and who has lived in the United States since 1977. A pioneer in the genres of one-stroke paintings and multicolor Zen circles, he has had solo exhibitions of brushwork and painting performances worldwide. His publications include Brush Mind; Penetrating Laughter: Hakuin’s Zen and Art; and Enlightenment Unfolds: The Essential Teachings of Zen Master Dogen. He is a fellow of the World Academy of Art and Science.
