Eastern Wisdom and the Hero’s Journey

Huston Smith, Chungliang Al Huang,
and Robert Walter

Joseph Campbell identified the archetype of the hero’s journey as the mythological individual journey toward self-actualization. He identified several stages in this journey, including:

• The call to adventure.
• Overcoming obstacles.
• Finding the boon.
• Bringing this learning back to the greater community.

In this workshop, participants will engage in an exploration of the three pillars of Eastern wisdom (Confucianism, Buddhism, and Taoism) as they relate to the Western concept of the hero’s journey. Join Huston Smith, Chunglian Al Huang, and Robert Walker, three luminaries and students of Joseph Campbell, in an exhilarating day of exploration and insight.

Huston Smith, PhD, is the Thomas J. Watson Professor of Religion and a Distinguished Adjunct Professor of Philosophy, Emeritus, at Syracuse University. Most recently, he served as Visiting Professor of Religious Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. Among his 14 books, The World’s Religions sold more than two million copies. In 1996, Bill Moyers devoted a five-part PBS special to Huston Smith’s life and work.

Chungliang Al Huang is an internationally respected tai ji master and authority of East-West cultural synthesis. He is the author and coauthor of numerous books on tai ji, mind-body-spirit integration, and Taoism as it relates to business, performance, and daily life, including the best-selling classic, Embrace Tiger, Return to Mountain: The Essence of Tai Ji. He is a research fellow at the Academia Sinica, a member of the World Academy of Art and Science, and a recipient of the Republic of China’s Gold Medal of Education.

Robert Walter is executive director of the Joseph Campbell Foundation. In 1979, he began to work on several projects with Joseph Campbell.
