Vedanta and
the Upanishads

Ravi Nathwani

The original themes of nondualism or Advaita emerged from the sacred scriptures known as the Upanishads and the Vedas more than 5000 years ago in India. The word Vedanta literally means “the end of the Vedas”—and it teaches that the supreme finality of all evolution of life is love or consciousness.

Given that the human condition has changed very little over the centuries, these ancient doctrines remain valid even in today’s complex society. By studying these teachings in a contemporary setting, workshop participants should become more aware of the underlying interconnectedness of all existence, and begin to come to terms with living a life of wisdom and kindness.

Ravi Nathwani was raised in a Vaishnav Hindu family where Hindu rituals were integrated into daily life from a very young age and where he was steeped in Hindu and Yoga traditions. He has become a modern-day messenger of a variety of Vedic studies through his lectures and workshops. Ravi has been a faculty member at Tufts University and at Tufts University’s Experimental College, where he has taught courses in Hindu Yoga and Buddhist meditation, among other subjects.
