Growing into the Elder Years
Sarah Jolley, RN, MFT
This program is designed to meet the educational
requirements in aging and long-term care for licensure as
a MFT and LCSW.
What does the journey into Elderhood require of the aging
individual and of the mental health professional? As Baby
Boomers move into the elder years, there is a greater need
to understand the complex impact of aging on the body, mind,
and spirit. Using didactic and experiential exercises, this
class will provide attendees with the information, tools,
and interventions to provide skilled treatment to older adults.
In this course we will learn to:
• Assess the mental and emotional status of the geriatric
client.
• Distinguish between depression and dementia.
• Understand the influence of medication on the older
adult.
• Gain awareness of the specific effects of aging on
mental health.
• Explore the cultural and spiritual aspects of aging.
• Apply this knowledge to the diagnosis and treatment
of the elder client.
• Examine the ethical and legal issues of elder abuse.
