Understanding Islam

Imam Bilal Hyde

Islam is one of the fastest-growing traditions in the United States and in the world, yet it is still frequently misrepresented and misunderstood in the West. Given the current world climate, it is important to gain a deeper understanding of the religious, cultural, and spiritual aspects of this global faith.

In this workshop, Imam Bilal Hyde will discuss the history and teachings that gave birth to the Islamic tradition. The workshop is designed for those interested in expanding their understanding and appreciation of Islam and of the religion’s critical role in today’s world. It will also provide rare insight into the mystical aspects of Islam, giving a greater perspective into the overall context of the religion.

Imam Bilal Hyde converted to Islam in 1968. As a young man he lived in Mecca and Medinah, where he was educated as an imam. He has pursued traditional Sufism for 30 years, and has studied in Omdurman in the Sudan, Egypt, and Ethiopia. Imam Bilal, who lives with his wife and daughters in Albany, California, has served as the imam at San Quentin State Prison and for several Sufi Orders. He currently teaches Qur’anic recitation and classes on the inner meanings of the Qur’an, and leads retreats throughout the United States.
