Continuing Education for Mental Health Professionals

This course addresses strategies for the assessment, detection, intervention and prevention of opposite- and same-sex intimate partner violence, including spousal and child abuse (IPV). Using interactive exercises, discussion, personal experience review, roleplay practice and lecture, participants explore the dynamics of IPV from interpersonal, family, community and multicultural perspectives. The course will particularly review social conditionings by gender, race, sexual orientation, gender expression, economic and other differences as factors both in IPV and therapists’ approaches to working with IPV clients. Participants learn strategies for culturally-appropriate assessment and treatment of the abuser and the survivors of IPV. Finally, the course outlines legal requirements, reporting and ethical issues and appropriate community resources for work with abusers and abuse survivors.
The course is designed to meet the Board of Behavioral Sciences requirement to complete a one-time course in spousal abuse.
Allan Creighton has had over thirty years of experience in social justice education with universities, schools, government and nonprofit agencies, focusing on public health, alliance-building and violence prevention. He has developed and presented workshops, trainings, classroom courses, campus-wide prevention activities and conference keynotes reaching 5,000-10,000 participants annually - including young adults and teens. He has created consultation and prevention policy with university and school systems, authored 5 books, coauthored 6 books and produced video on violence prevention and social justice.
