Tanya Wilkinson began her current art life as a papermaker and, in the early 1990s, started to make large mixed-media constructions that incorporate cast paper, found objects, printed and drawn images, and textiles. Much of her work deals with feminist content and has been shown at many alternative spaces in the Bay Area, as well as at shows in Malta and Italy. Both the political and narrative elements typical of the feminist art movement are a major part of her work. Wilkinson’s favored way of presenting herself and getting a point across is to tell stories, part of her heritage of growing up in the American South, where storytelling is a tradition passed down through the generations. In her artwork, she discriminately appropriates objects that give her work the power to evoke a response and tell a powerful story.
