THEATRE FOR CHANGE
A project of the CIIS Drama Therapy Program presents an original, collectively developed performance piece. Eight players from diverse backgrounds face each other and themselves to explore what Martin Luther King called beloved community -- a place where we take responsibility for everyone's liberation by creating communities that are truly inclusive of all people.
Theatre for Change troupe:
Maitri Gopalakrishna,

Theatre for Change is sponsored by the CIIS Office of Diversity and Human Resources, the Office of the Dean of Students, the Drama Therapy Program, and the MCJ Foundation. For more information please call the Drama Therapy program at 415.575.6230.
The project was initiated three years ago
by Dr. Renee Emunah, Founder/Director of
the Drama Therapy Program, in collaboration
with Drama Therapy students. The Drama Therapy
Program – now in its 24th year (and
still one of only two accredited graduate
drama therapy program in the US) –
is dedicated to facilitating not only individual
healing and change, but also social transformation.
CIIS offers the Master of Arts Degree in
Counseling Psychology with a concentration
in Drama Therapy. Theater provides a way
of reaching hearts as well as minds, so
that the effects of racism and other forms
of oppression can be felt, rather than only
intellectually discussed. Theater also offers
a way to speak truths, and have audiences
“digest” these, in a way that
often feels too confrontational in dialogue.
The performances over the past four years
have been attended by nearly all of the
CIIS faculty, administration, staff, and
a majority of students, and have been received
with great enthusiasm. The troupe has also
performed at the National Association for
Drama Therapy Conference.
